BT Sport grabs a million subscribers

As the start of another Premier League season draws ever-closer, BT has revealed that its new sports television package has acquired one million subscribers within three months.

However, BT’s decision to make the channels available for free if customers sign up to its broadband package means the majority of those tuning into its first Premier League game on Saturday evening are not paying for the privilege.

BT’s figure compares well to former Sky Sports rival Setanta Sports, which took four months to pass the million mark – although ended up retreating in 2009 amidst administration when it failed to pay the Premier League to maintain rights for certain football matches.

BT’s entry into an arena that has been traditionally dominated by Sky Sports has come at great expense: The firm has spent more than £1bn on sports rights, netting it 38 Premier League games throughout the season. With its 116 games, Sky Sports still rules the roost when it comes to Premier League broadcasting, but John Petter, managing director of BT’s Consumer division believes this could change.

“We said we would return sport to grass roots fans and they are cheering in large numbers,” he said. “We are rewarding our customers for their loyalty and the strategy is working. These are early days but we plan to make the most of this initial surge in demand, as fans get excited about the season ahead.”

BT has reached this figure despite the channels only being available on its own BT Vision platform and Sky. At the time of writing, no deal has been made to offer Virgin Media’s four million customers any form of access to BT Sport.
